Womens' 1st Team

Before their 2026 league campaign got underway, the Women's 1st Team had a delayed cup Finals Day to contest!

Played in late April, 2025's Finals Day was held at Mellor CC with Mottram ultimately running out champions following impressive wins v Romiley and Dinting.

The semi-final versus Romiley was an edgy affair with the MCC side batting well but racked with nerves first up. Annie's 25* ensuring we set 281. An expensive first pair set the cat amongst the pigeons but eventually calmness prevailed and wickets for Imogen, tight lines from Julie and Joanne ensured we got through. In the final the team were back on point and full of momentum from the first game's victory. A comfortable 40 run win seeing them crowned champions!

Following cup success, a pleasing 1st campaign in the GMCL Premier League saw the Women’s 1s finish the season in 4th place, having been right in the mix at the top throughout.

Life in the GMCL Prem got off to the perfect start in May with reigning league champions Roe Green deposed first up, courtesy of Annie’s 15* and Sharon’s 1/5. It was soon 2 wins from 2 with Flowery on the wrong end of Joanne Smith’s riotous 37* and Lucy’s 2/34.

May ended with defeat to Werneth, but The W1s went into June knowing a title challenge looked very much on the cards. The team responded beautifully and notched up another two wins, Moorside out-bowled by MCC as Steph, Sharon and Joanne helped themselves to wickets before Stayley were overpowered by Joanne 25* and Annie 15*.

Progress up the table was, alas, then slowed by two defeats by the barest of margins. 2fers from Iris, Annie and Lucy plus 15 from Jemima somehow wasn’t enough to get past Saddleworth who defended their total successfully by a margin of 1 run.  A week later, Winton pulled off a similar trick, scampering over the line by 8 runs despite Imogen’s 14.

"July required a strong bounceback, and two 2 wins from 2 was exactly that. Roe Green and Stayley both found themselves on the wrong end of Joanne. She ran through Roe Green with a timely 3fer and then followed that up with 4 wickets against Stayley who also copped for Annie (24*), Diane (11*) and Tilly (14*)."

Going into the business end of the season, the team were well set but 5 games in 3 weeks whilst contending with August availability and injuries always looked a tall order. Defeat to eventual Champions Winton and then Saddleworth putting paid to any late hope of a title dip.

2 dramatic home wins secured our creditable 4th place finish though. Flowery were beaten in a late-finishing, injury afflicted affair in which Julie and the young-guns Iris and Lucy got us over the line in virtual darkness. Moorside were then sent round the park by Jemima (22*) as Mottram won by 10.

With league action over, the Women's 1s found time to add some more silverware at the back end of the summer courtesy of a tournament win at Tintwistle. Opening up the MCC side beat High Lane before a wobble saw them beaten by Stalybridge A in Game 2. Mottram rallied nicely and a semi-final clash v Stalybridge B saw us roar back into life and pick up the win.

Awaiting in the final were Stalybridge A who had got the upper hand in our earlier game, but a fantastic performance saw us win by 10. Strong bowling showings from Joanne, Iris and Megan plus a spectacular run out by Diane seeing us home.

Women's 2nd Team

The Women’s 2nd Team ended a virtually imperious summer as Champions of DCCL Division 3, securing promotion and winning 10 of their 12 league games.

Strong from the off they didn’t lose a game until Mid June when 2nd placed High Lane snuck home by 1 run. A defeat avenged later in the season when victory at HLCC saw Mottram confirmed as League Winners.

The first 5 league games saw 5 wins, most by tight margins as we continually found a way to edge past teams.

On Gameweek 1, Amanda’s 15*, Steph’s 12* and 13 from Skipper Diane saw Mottram set New Mills a challenging 287. New Mills battled well and didn’t lose many wickets (only Diane getting her name in the scorebook) but they were behind the rate and couldn’t quite kick on, finishing on 277.

Seven days on, they fought their way past Offerton. 253 (spearheaded by Steph’s 13* plus 11 apiece from Sarah Heaps and Jemima Woolstencroft) didn’t look a huge score to defend. That is until Julie C (4/19), Jemima (2/8) and Amanda (2/19) bowled a line and length that OCC had no answer to. Offerton regularly lost wickets and that meant we were able to keep them at arms length to win by 18.

It was soon a hat-trick of wins when we overcame Dinting as Sarah Harris bludgeoned her way to a decisive 18* as the 2s overcame their opponents by 47. As we moved into June the positive momentum kept flowing as Amanda’s 15* proved crucial when beating Old Glossop by 10 and a breezy 16* from Sharon was enough to out-gun Newton.

Mid-June saw the High Lane hiccup before the W2’s really hit their straps and accelerated the title charge.

Natalie’s assertive 18*, Alison's 15*, 11 from Tracy and Colette's tidy 1/7 saw Old Glossop beaten by 100 before Steph’s 22 dismantled Newton and Georgia’s rapid 24* blew Dinting away.

"That left the trip to High Lane as a winner takes it all affair. Jemima’s 16 off 12 in the final pair supported by 13 from Natalie and 11 from Georgia saw us set 304 to win. Diane (1/34) and Imogen (2/11) duly delivered vital wickets that alongside tidy work behind the sticks from Sarah Heaps, helped stem High Lane’s chase and see us home by 17 runs."

An accomplished campaign that saw the 2s side perfectly balance blooding new faces whilst delivering competitive and winning cricket. Congratulations to everyone who contributed and an exciting season in Division 2 lies ahead.
